Your car has served you well on your daily DC Metro Area commute. Or maybe it hasn’t. Either way, it’s time to sell it. Selling your car in Virginia can be confusing if you’re selling it to a private party instead of letting MINI of Sterling buy it. For instance, can you sell a car without a title in Virginia? We’re here to help, so we’ve put together the guide below on how to sell a car in Virginia below.

How to Sell a Car in Virginia – 5 Steps

Confused about how to go about selling your car in Virginia? Don’t be. Just follow these simple steps:

How to Sell a Car in Virginia

  • Get all your paperwork together. In most cases, this is just the Title. Certain localities, like Loudon County, will require that the buyer take the vehicle in for a valid emission inspection before he or she can register it. But that is not required for the vehicle to be sold.
  • Sign the title over. If two names are on the title separated by “and” or “and/or”, both parties must sign. If the names are separated by “or”, just one party needs to sign. Accurately fill out the mileage and sales price.
  • Take your license plate off of the vehicle.
  • Notify the DMV that you have sold, traded, or donated your vehicle. You can do that on this  website.
  • Cancel your insurance.

Can You Sell a Car Without a Title in Virginia?

What if you’ve lost the title? What if you’re selling the car on behalf of someone who is deceased? What if your name is on the title, but the other party is deceased? Can you sell a car without a title in Virginia? No, but the State of Virginia has made provisions for all of those scenarios:

  • Lost or stolen title – submit form VSA 67 Application for Replacement of Substitute Title
  • Deceased owner – submit a copy of the will, a certified death certificate, and form VSA 24 Authority to Transfer Virginia Title Certification
  • Deceased co-owner – apply for a substitute title to remove the name of the deceased
